This easy chocolate frosting is an excellent choice when you need to frost a cake in a hurry. If you have some cocoa, butter, and powdered sugar, you can make this frosting. Use this frosting to spread on vanilla cupcakes, a chocolate cake, or these peanut butter cupcakes.

Creamy Chocolate Frosting

This chocolate frosting is surprisingly easy to fix and wonderful on a cake or cupcake. It’s made with cocoa.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 tablespoons butter (softened)
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 5 to 6 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat.
  2. Add the cocoa powder to the melted butter and stir until smooth.
  3. Transfer the cocoa and butter mixture to a medium mixing bowl.
  4. Sift 2 1/2 cups of the powdered sugar.
  5. With an electric mixer on low speed, beat in about 1 1/4 cups of the powdered sugar along with 3 tablespoons of the milk. Beat in another 1 1/4 cups of powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons of milk. Add more milk or powdered sugar if needed for consistency.
  6. The recipe makes enough to frost arectangular 1-layer or 2-layer cake.
