A classic Waldorf salad is a combination of apples, celery, and walnuts with a mayonnaise dressing. The original recipe, purportedly created by Oscar Tschirky of NYC’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, was made with diced apples and celery tossed with mayonnaise.

Unpeeled red apples are preferred for their color. Choose crisp, sweet apples, such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, Cosmic Crisp, or Pink Lady.

Recipe Variations

  • Grapes: Halved or whole seedless grapes can add juiciness and sweetness.
  • Lemon Juice: Add splash of lemon juice to add bright flavor.
  • Raisins: Add sweetness to the salad with raisins.
  • Dried Cranberries: For sweetness and color, add a handful of dried cranberries.
  • Lettuce: Serve Waldorf salad on a bed of lettuce or mixed greens for an attractive presentation.
  • Pecans: Replace the walnuts with pecans.
