Quick and easy. Ready in under 10 minutes with minimal prep.

Fresh flavor. Steaming highlights the natural sweetness of broccoli without overcooking.

Healthy and versatile. Works with almost any main dish and can be customized with seasonings or sauces.

Ingredient Notes

  • Broccoli: Use fresh crowns and cut them into uniform florets so they steam evenly.
  • Butter: Adds richness and flavor; you can substitute olive oil for a lighter version.
  • Garlic: Optional, but infuses the butter with subtle flavor — discard after melting if preferred.
  • Salt and pepper: Season simply to taste, or add a squeeze of lemon for brightness.

Steps to Make Easy Steamed Broccoli

  1. Cut the broccoli into small, even-sized florets.
  2. Bring about an inch of water to a boil in a saucepan.
  3. Place the florets in a steamer basket over the simmering water, cover, and steam until just tender.
  4. While the broccoli steams, melt butter with the halved garlic in a small skillet.
  5. Discard the garlic and toss the hot broccoli with the melted butter.
  6. Season with salt and pepper before serving.

Tips for Perfect Broccoli

  • Don’t overcook — 4 to 5 minutes is usually enough for crisp-tender florets.
  • Keep the lid on to maintain steam and cook evenly.
  • Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a squeeze of lemon juice for a flavor boost.
  • Use a steamer basket that fits snugly over your saucepan to prevent excess condensation.

Recipe Variations

  • Garlic butter broccoli. Toss with sautéed garlic and melted butter for rich flavor.
  • Lemon broccoli. Add fresh lemon zest and juice before serving.
  • Parmesan broccoli. Sprinkle grated Parmesan or Pecorino Romano just before serving.
  • Asian-inspired. Drizzle with sesame oil and soy sauce or sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve alongside chicken, fish, or beef as a light vegetable side.
  • Add it to pasta, grain bowls, or stir-fries for extra nutrition.
  • Pair with melted cheese sauce or hollandaise for a comforting twist.
  • Toss into a salad for color and crunch.

How to Store Leftover Broccoli

Refrigerate: Transfer cooled broccoli to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.

Freeze: For longer storage, blanch the florets briefly, drain, and freeze on a tray before transferring to freezer bags.

Reheat: Warm gently in the microwave or in a skillet with a little butter or water to avoid overcooking.
