Brown Butter Blondies

Brown butter gives these blondies the best flavor, and they’re super easy to prepare and bake! Add chocolate chips and pecans for an amazing treat!

A stack of blondies on a dessert plate with a few more in the background.

These brown butter blondies are rich, chewy, and wonderfully aromatic thanks to the nutty depth that browned butter brings. They mix together quickly and bake into a golden bar that’s soft in the center and slightly crisp around the edges.

They’re the kind of dessert that works for any occasion—potlucks, lunch boxes, or weeknight cravings—and take well to all kinds of mix-ins. Chocolate chips, nuts, or even dried fruit blend beautifully with the caramel-like flavor of the brown sugar and butter.

What You’ll Like About This Recipe

Deep, nutty flavor. Browning the butter gives the blondies a richer taste than melted butter alone.

Soft and chewy texture. The center stays tender while the edges bake to a slight crisp.

Easy mix-and-bake method. Simple ingredients and minimal steps make this recipe fast.

Customizable. Add chocolate chips, nuts, or your favorite mix-ins.

Ingredient Notes

  • Unsalted butter – Browned for a toasted, nutty flavor that enhances the blondies.
  • Brown sugar – Adds moisture and caramel notes.
  • Eggs – Provide structure and help create chewiness.
  • Vanilla extract – Complements the brown butter’s depth.
  • All-purpose flour – Forms the blondie base; measure accurately for ideal texture.
  • Salt – Balances sweetness.
  • Baking powder & baking soda – Give lift without making the bars cake-like.
  • Chocolate chips – Provide melty pockets of sweetness throughout.
  • Pecans or walnuts – Add texture and pair perfectly with brown butter.

Steps to Make Brown Butter Blondies

  1. Brown the butter in a saucepan until lightly golden and aromatic, then cool slightly.
  2. Stir the brown sugar into the butter until smooth, then whisk in the eggs and vanilla.
  3. Whisk together the dry ingredients and add them to the wet mixture.
  4. Fold in the chocolate chips and nuts.
  5. Spread the batter in a greased pan and bake until golden and set in the center.

Tips

  • Watch the butter closely. It goes from browned to burnt quickly—remove it as soon as it turns golden.
  • Do not overbake. Blondies are best when the center is still slightly soft.
  • Use parchment for easy removal. It makes slicing cleaner and faster.

Recipe Variations

  • White chocolate version. Swap the semisweet chips for white chocolate to create a sweeter blondie that highlights the nutty brown butter flavor.
  • Caramel swirl blondies. Add spoonfuls of thick caramel to the batter and swirl gently for a richer, gooier bar.
  • Fruit-and-nut mix. Fold in dried cranberries, cherries, or blueberries along with pecans for a bakery-style blondie.
  • Espresso blondies. Add a teaspoon of instant espresso to intensify the caramel notes and complement the chocolate.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream for a decadent dessert.
  • Add whipped cream or fresh berries for a lighter finish.
  • Pair with coffee or tea for an afternoon treat.
  • Choose small squares for snack trays or larger rectangles for plated desserts.

How to Store

Store cooled blondies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. Keep layers separated with parchment if stacking.

To freeze, wrap the whole slab tightly or freeze individual squares in airtight packaging. They keep well for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature.

Refresh blondies by warming briefly in the microwave or a low oven to restore their softness.
