This easy treat has been around since at least the 70s because I remember my mother making them. All you need is some crunchy chow mein noodles (Amazon link), peanuts, and butterscotch chips. Melt the butterscotch chips, combine with the chow mein noodles and peanuts, and you have a sweet and crunchy treat that will satisfy your cravings! No baking, no fuss, and very little cleanup.

How to Store Chow Mein Candy

Put completely cooled candy in an airtight container with sheets of wax paper in between layers. Store it at cool room temperature for up to 1 week. If room temperature is warm, store the candy in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.

  • 2 cups butterscotch chips
  • 1 teaspoon shortening, margarine, or vegetable oil
  • 3 cups (6 ounces) chow mein noodles
  • 1 cup roasted peanuts

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Surface: Line a baking sheet with wax paper or parchment paper.
  2. Melt: Place the butterscotch chips and shortening or oil in a large microwave-safe bowl. Heat on 50% power for 30 seconds, then stir. Repeat, stirring after each 30 seconds until the mixture is melted and smooth.
  3. Combine: Add the chow mein noodles and peanuts and stir to coat thoroughly.
