Instead of a more complicated and time-consuming sweet potato casserole, this Thanksgiving make these easy maple mashed sweet potatoes; just cook, mash, and flavor. That’s all there is to it! Feel free to make some adjustments. Honey is a good alternative to the maple syrup, or use another sweetener, such as brown sugar or golden syrup.

Recipe Variations

  • Add a dash of cinnamon to the mashed sweet potatoes for another layer of flavor.
  • Spread the mashed sweet potatoes in a baking dish and top with marshmallows. Broil until the marshmallows are golden brown.
  • To make the mashed potatoes savory, skip the maple syrup. Sauté 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh sage for 2 minutes in the butter. Add the sage and butter to the mashed potatoes along with a dash of nutmeg and salt and pepper, to taste.

Maple syrup adds sublime flavor to these mashed sweet potatoes. This is a super easy dish to prepare, and it’s lighter than the typical sweet potato casserole.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds sweet potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt (plus more, to taste)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • Cinnamon, to taste, optional
  • 4 tablespoons half-and-half (or use light cream or milk)

Instructions
