Air Fryer Apple Crumble
Our air fryer apple crumble, combines warm spices, sliced apples, and a crispy topping for an utterly irresistible dessert.
Our air fryer apple crumble is the perfect dessert to throw together quickly with fresh apples and simple pantry ingredients. Add a drizzle of cream or a scoop of ice cream for an irresistible dessert that everyone will love.
The recipe combines fresh, sweet/tart apples—I like Honeycrisp—warm spices, and sugar. The buttery brown sugar crumb topping includes oats for extra texture.
Why the Air Fryer?
The air fryer is a good choice because it cooks quickly. Plus, it doesn’t heat the house up or use as much energy as a conventional oven.
Recipe Variations
Filling Variations
- Different Apples: Try Granny Smith for tartness, Fuji or Gala for extra sweetness, or a mix for complexity.
- Pears: Try using sliced pears instead of apples.
- Add Berries: Stir in 1/2 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries, raspberries, or cranberries with the apples before cooking.
- Caramel Apple Crumble: Replace the water with 1 tablespoon of caramel sauce for richer flavor.
- Spiced Apples: Add a pinch of nutmeg, allspice, or cardamom to the apple mixture.
Topping Variations
- Nutty Crumble: Add 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans to the crumble mixture for extra texture.
- Coconut Crunch: Mix in 2 tablespoons of unsweetened shredded coconut.
- Granola Topping: Replace quick oats with granola for a crunchier, more textured finish.
- Gluten-Free: Use a gluten-free flour blend in place of all-purpose flour.
Flavor Twists
- Citrus Zest: Stir in 1 teaspoon of lemon or orange zest with the apples.
- Boozy Kick: Add a splash of bourbon or spiced rum (1 tablespoon) to the apple mixture before cooking.
- Savory-Sweet: Add a small pinch of sea salt flakes on top before the final air fry.
How to Store
Refrigerator: Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Freeze Transfer the apple crumble to an airtight container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost in the fridge overnight.
How to Reheat
Air Fryer: Reheat in the air fryer at 325°F for 5 to 8 minutes or until thoroughly heated.
Oven: Put the crumble or a portion in a baking dish and cover loosely with foil. Bake at 350°F for 10 to 15 minutes.
Microwave: Transfer a serving-size portion to a microwave-safe bowl, cover with a damp paper towel, and warm for 45 to 60 seconds or until heated through.
