Ham Salad

ham salad in a bun with lettuce

Ham salad is one of my favorite ways to use leftover baked ham. It’s a classic, nostalgic favorite — simple, creamy, and endlessly versatile. The finely chopped ham mixture blends beautifully with celery, onion, mayonnaise, and sweet relish. Stuff the ham salad into buns or bread for sandwiches, or pile it onto lettuce leaves for a low-carb alternative. A hard-boiled egg and sweet relish add flavor to the ham salad, while celery and finely chopped onion provide crunch.

Whether you enjoy it piled into sandwiches, scooped onto crisp lettuce leaves, or served as a dip with crackers, this easy ham salad is a quick and satisfying lunch option you can make ahead and keep in the fridge.

What You’ll Like About This Dish

Perfect use for leftovers. A great way to transform leftover ham into a brand-new dish.

Quick and easy. Minimal chopping and mixing — ready in minutes.

Creamy and flavorful. Sweet relish adds a bit of tang and crunch.

Versatile. Serve in sandwiches, on lettuce, or with crackers.

Ingredient Notes

  • Ham – Finely chopped or minced leftover ham works best for texture.
  • Celery – Adds crunch and freshness.
  • Onion – A small amount of finely chopped onion balances the richness.
  • Mayonnaise – Adjust the amount to make it creamier or lighter.
  • Sweet pickle relish – Adds sweetness, tang, and texture; Wickles works wonderfully.
  • Pickle juice – A splash brightens the flavor and loosens the mixture.
  • Egg – A chopped hard-boiled egg adds richness and body.
  • Black pepper – Just enough to enhance the flavors.

Steps to Make Ham Salad

  1. Combine the chopped ham, celery, onion, mayonnaise, relish, and pickle juice.
  2. Add the minced egg and stir to blend everything evenly.
  3. Adjust the mayonnaise or seasonings to taste.
  4. Use immediately or chill until serving.

Tips

  • Pulse the mixture in a food processor if you want a smoother, spreadable texture.
  • Use leftover baked ham for the best flavor — smoked ham adds extra depth.
  • Start with less mayonnaise and add more until you reach your ideal consistency.
  • Chill before serving to allow flavors to meld.

Recipe Variations

  • Add mustard. A spoonful of Dijon or yellow mustard adds zest.
  • Make it smoky. Use smoked ham or add a pinch of smoked paprika.
  • Add herbs. Fresh dill, parsley, or chives add brightness.
  • Make it spicy. Add chopped pickled jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve on fresh bread or rolls as sandwiches.
  • Pair with crackers or crostini for snacking.
  • Add to lettuce cups for a light lunch.
  • Garnish with fresh herbs or sliced pickles.

How to Store

Refrigerate: Store ham salad in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Stir before serving.

Freeze: Freezing is not recommended, as the mayonnaise and vegetables may separate.

Reheat: Not applicable; serve chilled or at room temperature.
