Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, packed, light or dark
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

For Serving

  • 6 hamburger buns
  • 1/2 cup cheese, shredded, optional
  • 2 cups lettuce, torn or shredded, optional
  • Dill pickle slices, optional
  • Thinly sliced red onion, optional

Instructions

  • Cook the Aromatics: Heat the vegetable oil in a large sauté pan or skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and peppers and cook for 4 to 6 minutes or until the onion is translucent. Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  • Cook the Turkey: Add the ground turkey to the pan and cook, stirring, for 4 to 6 minutes or until the turkey is no longer pink.

  • Add the Sauce Ingredients
    : Add the ketchup, barbecue sauce, tomato paste, water, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and chili powder to the pan and stir to blend. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed.

  • Simmer: Bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes or until thickened. Stir occasionally.

  • Assemble the Sandwiches: Toast the buns, if desired, and add a generous scoop of meat mixture to each one.
  • Serve: Add chips, fries, or a salad, and serve various toppings on the side. Enjoy!
