Homey fried apples make a delicious dessert or breakfast side dish. Consider serving them with waffles or pancakes, or add them to a pork or ham dinner.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 4 large apples
  • ¼ to ½ cup granulated sugar
  • Water (if needed)
  • Cinnamon sugar (optional)

Instructions

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples thinly.

  • Melt the butter in a medium heavy skillet over medium heat. Add apples to the skillet; cover and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the apples have softened.

  • Turn and sprinkle with about 1/3 cup sugar (or to taste; 1/4 to 1/2 cup total). Reduce the heat to low. Cover and cook for about 5 minutes longer.
    1/4 to 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • Uncover and cook about 2 minutes longer, or until the apples are syrupy. Stir frequently and add a few teaspoons of water if they become dry.
    Water (if needed)
  • Transfer the apples to a serving dish and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar if desired.
    Cinnamon sugar (optional)
  • Serve hot as a side dish to ham or pork meal, or with breakfast.
