  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Peel and core the pears, then slice them thinly. You should have about 2 cups of sliced pears.

  • Place the butter in the cake pan and put it in the oven just until melted, 2 to 4 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven.

  • Once the butter is melted, evenly sprinkle the brown sugar over it, then arrange the thinly sliced pears over it.

  • In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs for 4-5 minutes until light and lemon-colored. Gradually add the granulated sugar, mixing until combined.

  • Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the hot water or heated pear nectar, mixing just until smooth.

  • Pour the batter evenly over the fruit.
  • Bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Run a thin knife around the edge, then carefully invert it onto a serving platter.

  • Don’t let the cake cool too long in the pan, or the caramelized topping may stick. If any pear slices remain in the pan after inverting, gently loosen them with a thin spatula and arrange them back on top of the cake.
