Ingredients
  

  • Butter or cooking spray for greasing the slow cooker
  • 2 cups steel-cut oats
  • 6 ½ cups water
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • cup brown sugar (optional)
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped dried cranberries, plus more for garnish, if desired
  • ½ cup half-and-half
  • Cinnamon sugar* (optional), for serving

Recommended Equipment

  • 4- to 6-quart slow cooker

Instructions

  • Butter the inside of the slow cooker insert or spray with nonstick cooking spray.

  • Combine the oats, water, applesauce, brown sugar, if using, and cranberries in the greased slow cooker.
    2 cups steel-cut oats | 6 1/2 cups water | 1 cup applesauce | 1/3 cup brown sugar (optional) | 1 cup coarsely chopped dried cranberries
  • Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 9 hours.
  • Stir in the half-and-half and cook for 10 minutes longer.

  • Garnish the oatmeal with cinnamon sugar and dried cranberries, if desired.

Notes

* Cinnamon sugar: Stir together about ¼ cup sugar with 1 to 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon, or adjust to taste.
