  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 6 ounces sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ cup chopped onion
  • ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes, or to taste
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, (4 1/2 ounces)
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp dried leaf basil
  • 2 large eggs
  • cup milk
  • 2 cups pizza sauce, store-bought or homemade
  • ¼ to ½ cup pepperoni slices
  • 1 (2.25-ounce) can sliced black olives (optional), drained
  • ½ green bell pepper (optional), thinly sliced

Instructions

  • Heat the oven to 400°F.
  • Grease and flour a 9-by-13-inch baking pan or spray it with baking spray.
Butter and flour or baking spray
  • Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. If using mushrooms, add them and cook, stirring occasionally, until they release their moisture and begin to brown. Add the onion and cook for 2 minutes. Add the ground beef and crushed red pepper flakes and continue cooking for about 5 to 8 minutes, stirring frequently, until the beef is no longer pink. Remove from the heat, drain off the fat, and set aside.
1 tbsp olive oil | 6 ounces sliced mushrooms (optional) | 1 pound ground beef | 1/2 cup chopped onion | 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • In a bowl, combine the flour, salt, pepper, and basil.
1 cup all-purpose flour | 3/4 tsp salt | 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper | 1/2 tsp dried leaf basil
  • In a small bowl, whisk the eggs with the milk. Pour into the flour mixture and stir until well blended. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan and spread lightly to cover the bottom.
    2 large eggs | 2/3 cup milk
  • Sprinkle the ground beef mixture evenly over the batter layer.
  • Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven.
  • Spread the pizza sauce over the crust, and then top with the pepperoni, mushrooms, olives, and bell pepper, if using. Or, top with your favorite toppings.

  • Sprinkle evenly with the shredded cheese.
1 1/2 to 2 cups shredded Mozzarella cheese
  • Bake the pizza for 15 minutes longer, or until the toppings are hot and the cheese has melted.
