how to make croutons

Put that day-old bread to use with easy baked croutons. These croutons are seasoned with some garlic powder and basil along with olive oil and salt. Feel free to sprinkle the croutons with a tablespoon of two good quality grated Parmesan cheese before they go into the oven. Sprinkle croutons over casseroles, salads, or soups, or use them to make stuffing.
  1. Heat the oven to 375 F.
  2. If desired, cut the crusts from about 6 slices of bread. Leave the crusts on if you like. Cut the bread into 1/2-inch cubes.
  3. Put the bread cubes in a large bowl. Toss with 4 tablespoons of olive oil and 1/2 teaspoon of dried leaf basil, coating thoroughly.
  4. Spread the bread cubes out on a large rimmed baking sheet. Sprinkle lightly and evenly with kosher salt and garlic powder.
  5. Bake the croutons for about 15 minutes, or until lightly browned and crisp, turning every 5 minutes.
