This quick breakfast casserole is made with ham, eggs, milk, cheese, and whatever kind of bread you have on hand.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter, softened (for the baking dish and bread)
  • 4 slices bread (or split biscuits, croissants, dinner rolls, English muffins, etc.)
  • 1 1/2 cups diced cooked ham
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or a blend of cheeses)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • Dash Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 350 F.
  2. Butter a 1 1/2-quart baking dish.
  3. Butter the bread or biscuits.
  4. Line the baking dish with the buttered bread. Leave the pieces large or tear them into smaller pieces to fit.
  5. Sprinkle the diced ham over the bread layer and then sprinkle evenly with the cheese.
  6. In a bowl, combine the eggs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Whisk until smooth and well blended. Alternatively, use a blender to mix the eggs and milk.
  7. Pour the egg mixture over the cheese layer. Let the mixture stand for a few minutes. Gently press it down to keep everything coated with the eggs. The bread will soak up some of the egg mixture.
  8. Bake the breakfast casserole for 45 to 55 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. The casserole will puff up and appear lightly browned.
  9. Remove to a rack and let stand for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
