This barbecue bean casserole features a variety of beans, cooked to tangy, delicious perfection with a spicy semi-homemade barbecue sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 large can (28 ounces) baked beans
  • 1 can (15 ounces) great northern beans, drained
  • 1 can (15 ounces) lima beans or butter beans, drained
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 6 strips diced cooked bacon
  • 3/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 teaspoon spicy mustard
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar, light or dark
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 325 F.
  2. Combine the baked beans, great northern beans, and butter beans in a Dutch oven or casserole.
  3. Add the bell pepper, onion, and diced bacon and blend well.
  4. In another bowl, combine the barbecue sauce with the mustard, brown sugar, black pepper, chili powder, and cayenne pepper.
  5. Bake at for 1 hour.
  6. Remove the lid and continue baking for 20 to 30 minutes longer.
