Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (85/15 is best)
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Dash ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 4 split toasted sandwich rolls

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and break it up into smaller pieces. Let it cook, undisturbed, for 4 minutes. Add the onions and continue cooking, stirring often, for 5 to 6 minutes, or until the onions are translucent and the ground beef is completely cooked and no longer pink.
  2. Stir the flour into the beef mixture until absorbed into the fat and continue to cook for 2 minutes.
  3. Add the Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and water to the mixture. Cover and reduce the heat to low; cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until thickened. Taste and add salt and pepper, as needed.
  4. Serve the sloppy joe sauce in the toasted sandwich rolls.
