Finish these old-fashioned baked apples with a dollop of freshly whipped cream or a drizzle of syrup or sweet cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large apples
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup quick oats
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • pinch cloves, optional
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 375 F.
  2. Butter a baking dish.
  3. Core the apples without cutting all the way through to the bottom. With a sharp knife or melon baller, enlarge the center cavity to make room for the crumb mixture.
  4. Arrange the apples in the prepared baking dish.
  5. Stuff the apples with the crumb mixture and then sprinkle remaining crumbs over the apples.
  6. Cover the baking dish loosely with foil.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 50 to 60 minutes, or until the apples are fork-tender.
  8. Serve the stuffed baked apples with cream or whipped cream.
