Homey fried apples make a delicious dessert or breakfast side dish. Consider serving them with waffles or pancakes, or add them to a pork or ham dinner.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 4 large apples
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • Cinnamon sugar blend, optional

Instructions

  1. Peel and core the apples. Cut the apples into slices.
  2. Melt the butter in a medium heavy skillet over medium heat. Add apples to skillet; cover and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, or until the apples have softened.
  3. Turn and sprinkle with about 1/3 cup sugar (less if the apples are sweet and a bit more if they are very tart). Reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for about 5 minutes longer.
  4. Uncover and cook about 2 minutes longer, or until the apples are syrupy. Stir frequently and add a few teaspoons of water if they become dry.
  5. Transfer the apples to a serving dish and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar if desired.
  6. Serve hot as a side dish to ham or pork meal, or with breakfast.
