Ground turkey can be just as tasty as beef in these flavorful sloppy Joes!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup diced bell pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar, light or dark
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

For Serving

  • 6 split hamburger buns
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese, optional
  • 2 cups torn or shredded lettuce, optional
  • Dill pickle slices, optional
  • Thinly sliced red onion, optional

Instructions

  1. Cook the Aromatics: Heat the vegetable oil in a large sauté pan or skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and peppers and cook for 4 to 6 minutes or until the onion is translucent. Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute. sautéing aromatics
  2. Cook the Turkey: Add the ground turkey to the pan and cook, stirring, for 4 to 6 minutes or until the turkey is no longer pink. cooking ground turkey
  3. Add the Sauce Ingredients: Add the ketchup, barbecue sauce, tomato paste, water, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and chili powder to the pan and stir to blend. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed. blending in the sauce ingredients
  4. Simmer: Bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes or until thickened. Stir occasionally. simmering the turkey sloppy joe mixture
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches: Toast the buns, if desired, and add a generous scoop of meat mixture to each one. assembling turkey sloppy joe sandwiches
  6. Serve: Add chips, fries, or a salad, and serve various toppings on the side. Enjoy!
