Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (16 ounces) black beans (or pinto beans)
  • 2 pounds ground beef (85% is good)
  • 1 can (4 ounces) mild chopped green chile peppers
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 8 slices cheese (pepper jack, cheddar, or American)

Instructions

  1. Drain and rinse the canned beans and transfer to a large bowl.
  2. Add the ground beef to the beans along with the chile peppers, salt, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and pepper. Blend thoroughly.
  3. Shape the meat mixture into patties. With your thumb make a depression in the center of each burger. This will help keep them from puffing in the center.

Grill or Grill Pan

  1. Grill over high heat for about 3 to 5 minutes on each side.
  2. Add a slice of cheese to each burger and continue cooking just until the cheese has melted.

Skillet

  1. Add a small amount of oil to the skillet and heat over high heat. Add the burgers and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side.
  2. Add a slice of cheese to each burger and continue cooking just until the cheese has melted.

Notes

The USDA recommended minimum safe temperature for ground beef is 160 F. If ground poultry is in the mixture, cook the burgers to 165 F.
