Fresh broccoli is just as easy to cook as frozen, and the flavor and texture are better. There’s just a little more prep time involved. All you have to do wash the broccoli, cut the florets from the crowns and steam them for a few minutes.

Easy Steamed Broccoli

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 broccoli crowns
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 clove garlic, cut in half, optional
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut the broccoli crowns into small florets.
  2. Put about an inch of water into a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  3. Put the broccoli florets into a steamer insert or steamer basket and place over the boiling water. Reduce heat to keep the water simmering and cover the pan.
  4. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, until the broccoli is just tender.
  5. Meanwhile, put the butter and garlic halves, if using, in a skillet over medium heat. When the butter stops foaming, remove it from the heat. Let stand while the broccoli cooks.
  6. Discard the garlic pieces, if using, and toss the steamed broccoli with the butter. Add salt and pepper, to taste.
