A buckle is a cake that is typically made with berries. According to The Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink, the term, while probably quite old, was first recorded in print in 1959. The buckle is typically a cake that includes berries (often blueberries) and a crumb topping.

This blueberry buckle is a great little cake for summer baking, and it is a super easy preparation. Fresh summer blueberries make an extraordinary buckle, but good quality frozen berries may be substituted.

Other berries may be used in a buckle. Try making it with sliced strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries.
