Onion Gratin

print This is a delicious side dish for onion lovers, made with a white sauce, sliced onions, and cheese. I use sweet onions in this casserole, but yellow or white onions would work as well.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes

  1. Heat the oven to 325 F.
  2. Cut onions into thin slices; separate into rings. Place onion rings in an ungreased 1-1/2 quart casserole.
  3. For the white sauce, melt butter in a small saucepan; blend in flour and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in milk. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  4. Add salt, pepper, and cheese; stir until cheese has melted.
  5. Pour sauce over onions.
  6. Bake, uncovered, in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes.
